Shopify Brings On Tailwind Labs Team to Drive Custom Storefront Push

Website template business Tailwind Labs has joined Shopify, Tailwind Labs Founder and CEO Adam Wathan said in a Wednesday (Sept. 9) blog post.

Tailwind’s framework is installed more than 110 million times per week and styles products like ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit and Shopify, Wathan said in the post.

“We’re joining Shopify to give Tailwind a stable long-term home where it will be actively maintained for the millions of people who depend on it,” Wathan said.

In a post sharing Wathan’s announcement on X, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein said: “Shopify was one of the first companies to bet on Tailwind at scale. Years later, 110 million installs a week and it powers half the internet. Now it has a permanent home. Welcome to [Shopify], Adam and team.”

Walthan said in his post that at Shopify, the Tailwind team will help merchants design and host custom storefronts, manage sales and inventory in an admin area, and provide their customers with shopping and checkout experiences, ways to keep track of orders and ways to discover new products.

“Shopify is also on the frontier of where user interfaces need to go next with their explorations into agentic commerce,” Walthan said.

The Tailwind team will continue to lead and maintain Tailwind’s open-source projects such as Tailwind CSS, with the support of Shopify, and Tailwind customers will retain their access to products like Tailwind Plus and ui.sh. However, the company has closed sign-ups for new customers, Walthan said.

PYMNTS reported in August that Shopify saw its revenue increase 34% year over year in the second quarter. During the quarter, Shopify launched its first local payment offering in Mexico, expanded native B2B capabilities beyond its Plus tier for the first time so that more merchants can manage wholesale and direct-to-consumer sales from one admin dashboard, gained more enterprise brands on its platform and connected its AI toolkit to external coding and agent platforms so that merchants can build storefronts using tools outside Shopify’s own interface.

It was reported in May that Joshua Kushner‘s Thrive Capital invested about $100 million in Shopify, betting that artificial intelligence could enhance commerce.
