Meta (META) Stock: Faces AI Spending Test as Free Cash Flow Plunges 91%
TLDRs
- Meta’s free cash flow plunged 91% as aggressive AI infrastructure investment consumed operating cash.
- Revenue increased 28%, but expenses climbed much faster, pressuring profitability and margins.
- Meta’s advertising business remains strong despite rising infrastructure and AI-related costs.
- Investors now want clearer evidence that Meta’s massive AI spending can generate returns.
Meta Platforms enters the new trading week facing growing scrutiny over the financial cost of its artificial intelligence expansion after its second-quarter free cash flow dropped 91% year over year.
The company generated just $784 million in free cash flow during the quarter, down sharply from $8.55 billion during the same period last year. The decline came despite strong top-line growth, highlighting how quickly Meta’s spending on AI infrastructure is absorbing the cash generated by its core business.
Meta’s revenue increased 28% to $60.8 billion, compared with $47.52 billion a year earlier. However, total expenses jumped 55% to $42.03 billion, putting significant pressure on profitability.
Operating income declined 8% to $18.78 billion, while net income fell 14% to $15.85 billion. Diluted earnings per share also dropped to $6.18 from $7.14.
The numbers suggest that Meta’s AI strategy is creating a widening gap between revenue growth and cash generation. That gap could become increasingly important for investors as the company prepares to maintain enormous capital expenditures.
AI Infrastructure Drives Spending
The biggest pressure on Meta’s cash position is its rapidly expanding infrastructure investment.
Operating cash flow reached $31.86 billion in the second quarter, up from $25.56 billion a year earlier. Yet capital spending surged to $31.08 billion from $17.01 billion.
That means nearly all of Meta’s operating cash was directed toward capital investment during the quarter. Free cash flow represented only about 2.5% of capital spending, compared with roughly 50.3% in the year-ago period.
Meta has been aggressively building the computing capacity required to support increasingly sophisticated AI models and services. The company’s latest open-weight efforts further demonstrate its intention to compete across the AI ecosystem rather than rely solely on its traditional social media and advertising businesses.
Mark Zuckerberg’s company released the Muse Glimmer agentic model on August 10 and has also previewed Muse Spark 1.2. The smaller model is designed to operate on personal devices or a single graphics processor, potentially allowing broader distribution.
However, wider AI adoption does not necessarily translate into immediate revenue. Investors are therefore increasingly focused on whether Meta can eventually turn its AI investments into meaningful commercial returns.
Advertising Business Remains Strong
Despite the cash-flow deterioration, Meta’s underlying advertising operation continues to perform well.
Advertising impressions increased 14% during the quarter, while the average price per advertisement climbed 12%. The company’s family of applications also reached approximately 3.60 billion daily active people, representing 3% growth year over year.
Those figures provide an important source of support for META stock because they show that the company’s existing business continues to generate substantial demand even as management invests heavily in AI.
Zuckerberg has argued that artificial intelligence is already helping accelerate Meta’s core operations. The advertising figures offer some evidence for that argument, particularly as AI-powered tools improve ad targeting, recommendations and content discovery.
The challenge is that the scale of Meta’s investment is growing rapidly. Third-quarter revenue guidance stands between $61 billion and $64 billion, while the company expects 2026 capital expenditures to reach between $130 billion and $145 billion.
That spending level means investors will likely demand stronger evidence that AI can contribute directly to future earnings rather than simply increase infrastructure costs.
META Stock Faces AI Payoff Test
Meta stock closed at $589.85 on August 14 after declining 0.86% during the session. The shares had gained 2.8% in the previous session, showing that investors remain divided over how aggressively the company should pursue its AI strategy.
Wall Street remains broadly constructive, although several analysts have reduced their price targets following Meta’s earnings update.
Cantor Fitzgerald maintains an Overweight rating with a $680 target, while UBS has a Buy rating and a $715 target. Goldman Sachs also rates the stock Buy with a $725 target. JPMorgan is more cautious, maintaining a Neutral rating with a $640 target.
The differing targets reflect a central debate surrounding META stock: whether Meta’s enormous AI spending represents a necessary investment in future growth or a growing drag on shareholder returns.
One potential monetization channel is Meta’s Business Agents platform. The product reportedly reached one million business accounts within its first month, with subscriptions and token-based charges expected to become part of its monetization strategy during the second half of 2026.
If those products gain traction, they could provide Meta with new revenue streams capable of offsetting some of the cost associated with its AI infrastructure.
For now, however, the numbers leave investors with a clear test. Meta’s advertising engine is expanding, but its free cash flow is collapsing as AI spending accelerates. The company will need to demonstrate that its massive investment can eventually translate into stronger cash generation.
As Meta pushes deeper into open-weight AI and expands its computing infrastructure, the market’s focus may increasingly shift from how much the company is spending to how quickly that investment can begin paying for itself.
