China and Switzerland Advance Free Trade Agreement Negotiations

China has expressed its readiness to progress negotiations aimed at upgrading the existing free trade agreement (FTA) with Switzerland. This initiative seeks to enhance economic cooperation by expanding the agreement's scope to include services, digital trade, and investment, amidst rising global protectionism. The announcement followed a bilateral meeting in Bern, where China's Commerce Ministry emphasized the goal of achieving a 'high-standard' upgrade.

The current FTA, which took effect in 2014, was China's first trade deal with a continental European nation and has significantly facilitated bilateral trade, which now stands at approximately $60 billion annually. The agreement has already removed most tariffs on goods, covering nearly all Chinese exports to Switzerland and a substantial portion of Swiss exports to China. The ongoing upgrade discussions, which began in early 2024, aim to modernize the pact to reflect the evolving economic landscape.

Negotiations have included multiple rounds of talks, with officials reporting constructive progress. The proposed enhancements are intended to strengthen economic ties in higher-value sectors, particularly in technology and services. This move is seen as a commitment by both nations to maintain open trade channels, which is increasingly important given the current geopolitical climate and trade tensions.
