US Delegation to Hold Talks in Islamabad Amid Expiring Ceasefire with Iran

US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to lead a delegation to Islamabad for discussions with Iranian officials as the current ceasefire nears its expiration. Vance will be accompanied by senior envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, in an effort to secure a deal to end ongoing conflicts before the deadline.

The urgency of the talks is heightened by warnings from former President Donald Trump, who has threatened renewed military strikes on Iranian infrastructure if negotiations do not yield results. However, he has also indicated a willingness to extend the timeline for talks if progress is made.

Internal divisions within Iran have complicated the negotiation process. Initially, Iranian negotiators delayed their participation due to pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Recently, they received approval from Iran's Supreme Leader to attend the talks, which is seen as a significant step forward for diplomacy. Despite this, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has rejected negotiations under pressure, criticizing the US for maintaining a blockade and accusing it of attempting to force Iran into a position of surrender. The outcome of the Islamabad talks remains uncertain, with both sides facing significant internal and external pressures.
