Archer Aviation (ACHR) Stock: Midnight eVTOL Successfully Completes 40-Mile Test Flight in California
Key Takeaways
- Archer Aviation’s Midnight electric aircraft successfully flew a 40+ mile round-trip journey between Hollister and Salinas, California, taking approximately 12 minutes per leg at speeds reaching 125 mph.
- Shares of ACHR stock climbed a modest 0.35% during pre-market trading hours following news of the successful test flight.
- The company executed over 70 test flights during August alone and has scheduled additional demonstrations throughout Northern California, Los Angeles, Texas, Florida, and New York.
- ACHR stock surged 24.6% in August following the announcement of its acquisition of Boeing’s Wisk Aero, SkyGrid, and Insitu business units.
- Analysts maintain a Strong Buy consensus on ACHR with a mean price target of $11.60, suggesting potential upside exceeding 103%.
On September 8, Archer Aviation successfully completed a piloted round-trip journey between Salinas and Hollister municipal airports in California as part of its “No Roads” demonstration tour. ACHR stock currently sits near $5.72, registering a marginal 0.35% increase in pre-market activity.
The demonstration flight spanned over 40 miles with each leg requiring approximately 12 minutes to complete. By comparison, the equivalent automobile journey typically requires 30 to 40 minutes. The Midnight aircraft reached maximum speeds of 125 mph while maintaining a cruising altitude of 3,550 feet.
These demonstration flights are being executed in close collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration. According to Archer, the tour serves to accumulate practical operational knowledge in preparation for its upcoming commercial air-taxi operations.
Throughout August, Archer completed over 70 test flights, which included another piloted round-trip journey between Salinas and Monterey. This represents a significant acceleration in testing activities for a company still pursuing FAA certification.
National “No Roads” Demonstration Tour Expands
The demonstration tour will continue expanding throughout Northern California with scheduled stops including Monterey, San Martin, San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco. Following the California demonstrations, Archer plans to conduct flights in the Los Angeles region before participating in operations through the White House’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program across Texas, Florida, and New York.
CEO Adam Goldstein stated the company’s objective is to fly authentic routes and accumulate operational experience in advance of the LA28 Olympic Games and the company’s scheduled eVTOL deployment.
However, the subdued pre-market response for ACHR shares reveals investor sentiment clearly. Market participants continue awaiting critical developments related to FAA certification completion, a confirmed commercial launch timeline, and the generation of actual revenue.
August Boeing Acquisition Announcement Lifted ACHR
During August, ACHR stock climbed 24.6%, significantly outperforming both the S&P 500’s 2.6% gain and the Nasdaq’s 3.9% advance for the same period. The primary driver was an acquisition agreement announced August 10 to purchase three Boeing subsidiaries: Wisk Aero, SkyGrid, and Insitu.
Wisk brings extensive experience with over 1,700 eVTOL test flights completed. SkyGrid provides air-traffic management solutions and autonomous flight technology. Insitu specializes in drone manufacturing and associated software platforms.
As part of the transaction, Boeing will acquire a 16.5% ownership stake in Archer, financed through newly issued shares. This arrangement creates genuine dilution concerns for current shareholders.
On the positive side, Insitu currently operates profitably with approximately $200 million in annual revenue. This would provide Archer with an immediate enhancement to its revenue base.
Despite August’s strong performance, ACHR shares remain down approximately 24% year to date and have declined roughly 1.2% during September.
Six Wall Street analysts have issued ratings on ACHR over the past three months, resulting in a Strong Buy consensus recommendation. The average analyst price target stands at $11.60, implying potential upside exceeding 103% from the current trading price of $5.72.
ACHR’s 52-week trading range extends from $4.30 to $14.62, providing perspective on the stock’s current valuation level.
