US Inflation Rises in August, Heightening Federal Reserve Rate Hike Expectations

Inflation in the United States accelerated in August, reinforcing expectations for a potential interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve in the coming week. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.4% month-over-month and 3.4% year-over-year, while the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased by 0.3% month-over-month.

A significant contributor to this inflationary trend was the rise in gasoline prices, driven by oil prices surpassing $100 per barrel. This surge in energy costs is raising concerns about sustained inflation, prompting analysts to reassess the likelihood of monetary policy adjustments by the Federal Reserve.

Prior to the inflation report, markets had estimated a 70% probability of a 25 basis point rate hike. The combination of rising inflation, strong employment figures, and high oil prices is intensifying pressure on the Federal Reserve to consider tightening monetary policy.
