UBS Sees Opportunity in Tech Sell-Off Amid AI Growth

UBS has characterized the recent decline in technology stocks as an opportunity rather than a cause for concern regarding the artificial intelligence sector. The bank noted that the Nasdaq fell 1.9% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 8.2% over the past ten days, influenced by rising long-dated Treasury yields and uncertainties surrounding AI capital expenditure. Despite this, UBS remains optimistic, citing strong growth in token consumption and cloud revenue as indicators of sustained demand for AI technologies.

The bank reported a 24% week-over-week increase in token consumption, with volumes expanding more than thirtyfold over the past year. UBS forecasts total AI capital expenditure to reach $1.2 trillion by 2027, a 33% increase from an estimated $900 billion in 2023. Additionally, major hyperscalers experienced an average cloud revenue growth of 48% year-over-year in the second quarter, with expectations for further acceleration to 58% in the current quarter.

UBS highlighted that semiconductor valuations have compressed to around 22 times forward earnings, below the post-ChatGPT average of 24 times. This decline, coupled with rising earnings growth expectations—92% for key semiconductor companies this year—has created attractive entry points for investors. The bank advises a diversified allocation to technology stocks, emphasizing the importance of both the enabling layer of the AI value chain and defensive tech segments such as payment networks and data center REITs.
