TikTok Building Venmo-Style Payment System for Direct Messages
Key Takeaways
- TikTok is building a peer-to-peer money transfer system within its U.S. app’s direct messaging platform
- Developers discovered evidence of the feature buried in TikTok’s iOS application code
- The payment functionality would leverage TikTok Pay, currently operational in several Southeast Asian markets
- Stock prices for PayPal and Western Union declined following the disclosure
- ByteDance, TikTok’s owner, has been pursuing financial technology initiatives since 2021
TikTok is quietly developing functionality that would enable users to transfer funds directly to one another via the platform’s messaging system. While the social media giant hasn’t made any official announcement, researchers discovered evidence of the feature embedded within the current U.S. version of TikTok’s iPhone application, as reported by Bloomberg.
The money transfer capability would operate through TikTok Pay, a payment infrastructure already functioning in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. In those regions, the system processes transactions for TikTok Shop merchandise and other in-platform purchases.
A company representative acknowledged that the feature hasn’t entered testing phases in any market, indicating the project remains in preliminary development stages.
When eventually deployed, the system would enable users to exchange funds within their direct message conversations. Money recipients would need to accept incoming payments before a designated deadline, while senders would receive confirmation through push notifications or their message inbox.
Analysis of the underlying code reveals an additional feature allowing users to attach messages alongside their payments. This design mirrors PayPal’s Venmo platform, where users routinely add descriptions or notes to their financial transactions.
Market Response From PayPal and Western Union
Stock values for PayPal and Western Union experienced significant declines following Tuesday’s Bloomberg revelation. The market reaction signals investor anxiety that TikTok may emerge as a formidable challenger to incumbent payment processing companies.
With approximately 2 billion active users worldwide each month, TikTok commands a massive potential customer base for any financial services expansion into American markets.
ByteDance, the Beijing-headquartered corporation controlling TikTok, launched its initial payment venture in 2021 through Douyin Pay in China. The Chinese service enables users to connect banking accounts, complete purchases, and distribute gratuities during live streaming broadcasts.
Currently valued above $550 billion, ByteDance is actively recruiting for financial technology positions across the United States and international markets. The corporation projects its annual revenue will reach approximately $186 billion, representing growth from the $155 billion recorded in 2024.
Social Media Platforms Race Toward Financial Services
Elon Musk’s X, the platform previously known as Twitter, has similarly pursued financial service development. Select content creators on X have already experimented with X Money, a peer-to-peer transaction system that Musk indicated would launch publicly in April.
ByteDance might ultimately decide against releasing the peer-to-peer payment capability to American users. However, the sophisticated development work evident in the application code demonstrates the company is seriously evaluating the opportunity.
TikTok Pay remains confined to Southeast Asian territories and hasn’t been extended to the United States market. Any American rollout would likely trigger regulatory scrutiny given ByteDance’s corporate connections to China.
This latest discovery reinforces an ongoing trend of TikTok extending its business model beyond video entertainment into e-commerce and financial infrastructure, sectors where the company has been making substantial investments over recent years.
