US Stocks Experience Rebound Amid Inflation Concerns
US stocks experienced a notable rebound on Friday, ending a four-day losing streak despite a consumer price index (CPI) report that exceeded expectations. The inflation data has increased the likelihood of another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve to nearly 90%. However, Treasury yields retreated from their session highs, and oil prices declined, prompting a return of buyers to the equity market. Major indices saw gains ranging from 0.45% to 0.98%, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by 509.05 points to close at 52,578.27.
Despite the positive session, the overall performance for the week remained negative. The Dow industrial average fell by 1.57%, the S&P 500 decreased by 0.80%, and the Nasdaq composite dropped by 0.66%. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks smaller companies, was particularly affected, declining by 2.41% as these firms are more sensitive to rising borrowing costs.
In corporate news, Dell Technologies saw its shares surge by 11.94% to a record close near $567.12, driven by Oracle's plans to invest approximately $90 billion to $95 billion in data center infrastructure to support growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI). This investment is expected to benefit companies like Dell and Super Micro Computer, which provide essential hardware for AI data centers. Conversely, Oracle's shares initially rose following strong earnings but ultimately closed down by 1.78%, reflecting investor concerns about the substantial capital commitments required for its expansion.
