Strategy (MSTR) Stock Surges 4.4% as CEO Confirms Plans to Resume Bitcoin Purchases
Key Highlights
- MSTR shares advanced 4.4% to $96.60 following on-chain data revealing whale accumulation of approximately 43,000 BTC valued at $2.75 billion over 60 days
- CEO Phong Le announced that Bitcoin purchases will recommence later in 2026 following a seven-week acquisition hiatus
- The company maintains $4.8 billion in USD cash holdings and 840,447 BTC, with no changes to its Bitcoin position for seven straight weeks
- Sound Financial Strategies Group initiated a $1.69 million position, contributing to the 59.84% institutional ownership
- Wall Street maintains a Moderate Buy consensus with a $239.81 average target, despite Weiss Ratings’ recent downgrade to Sell and reduced price targets from several analysts
Shares of Strategy (MSTR) advanced 4.4% during Wednesday’s morning session, touching $96.60, after blockchain analytics revealed substantial Bitcoin accumulation by major wallet holders totaling approximately 43,000 BTC across the previous 60-day period.
This whale accumulation, representing approximately $2.75 billion in value, elevated a critical spot demand indicator toward its first positive territory since the final days of February 2026. Given that MSTR functions essentially as a leveraged Bitcoin play, enhanced demand indicators typically trigger swift stock price reactions.
The upward momentum intensified when CEO Phong Le publicly confirmed that Strategy anticipates restarting its Bitcoin acquisition program in the latter part of this year. The seven-consecutive-week purchasing hiatus had generated concern among certain shareholders about the company’s commitment to its Bitcoin strategy.
Throughout this dormant period, Strategy generated approximately $333.7 million via equity offerings while expanding its USD cash position to $4.8 billion. This substantial liquidity reserve positions the firm to execute significant Bitcoin purchases at its discretion.
The company’s Bitcoin treasury remains static at 840,447 BTC across seven weeks. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has indicated potential interest in executing MSTR share buybacks should the stock price discount to net asset value become sufficiently attractive.
Additionally, Strategy completed a repurchase of approximately $132 million in STRC preferred shares, a strategic maneuver designed to optimize its preferred equity framework.
Institutional Investment Trends
Sound Financial Strategies Group LLC established a fresh MSTR position during the second quarter, acquiring 51,323 shares with an estimated value of $1.69 million. This holding represents 1.1% of the firm’s total portfolio and ranks as its 14th-largest equity position.
Institutional shareholders collectively control 59.84% of Strategy’s outstanding equity. Multiple investment firms have expanded or established positions in recent reporting periods, including Dogwood Wealth Management, which increased its stake by 280% during the fourth quarter.
Corporate insider transactions have skewed toward dispositions. During the trailing 90-day window, insiders divested 165,325 shares totaling approximately $20.3 million, while acquiring merely 11,166 shares valued near $1 million.
Wall Street Price Projections
Analyst coverage remains predominantly constructive though somewhat tempered from previous levels. HC Wainwright maintains a $325 price objective. TD Cowen reduced its target from $400 to $260 while preserving its Buy recommendation. Cantor Fitzgerald lowered its projection from $212 to $186 alongside an Overweight stance.
Weiss Ratings diverged from the broader sentiment, downgrading MSTR from Hold to Sell on August 4.
The aggregated consensus among 19 analyst firms stands at Moderate Buy, featuring a mean 12-month price target of $239.81, significantly above Wednesday’s opening level of $92.52.
MSTR’s 52-week trading range spans from $81.81 to $365.21. The equity’s 50-day moving average sits at $99.64, while the 200-day moving average rests at $128.90.
Strategy disclosed a quarterly loss of $24.45 per share in its latest earnings release, substantially exceeding the consensus forecast of a $2.19 loss. Revenue totaled $122.37 million, representing a 6.9% year-over-year increase.
MSCI has introduced a proposal to exclude Strategy from select global investable market indexes, a potential development that may diminish passive fund allocation to the shares.
