SpaceX (SPCX) Stock: Drops as Massive Share Unlock Pressures Thin Trading Float
TLDRs
- SpaceX shares fell 2.6% as a massive share unlock raised supply concerns.
- The 319 million eligible shares equal more than four trading sessions.
- Strong AI and connectivity growth continues supporting SpaceX’s ambitious valuation.
- Investors now face a crucial test of demand against increasing share supply.
SpaceX (SPCX) stock came under pressure Wednesday as investors assessed the impact of a major share unlock that could significantly expand the company’s available trading float.
Shares closed at $139.65, down 2.57%, while approximately 72.5 million shares changed hands. The decline came as 319 million additional shares became eligible for trading, creating a potentially important supply overhang for a stock that has experienced substantial volatility since its public debut.
The newly unlocked shares represent roughly 4.4 times Wednesday’s trading volume. That does not mean all 319 million shares will immediately be sold, but the size of the tranche has nevertheless become an important consideration for investors.
The stock remains 3.4% above its $135 IPO price. However, it is also well below its recent high of $225.64, leaving investors increasingly focused on whether demand can absorb additional shares without putting further pressure on the price.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp., SPCX
Massive Unlock Tests Market Demand
The latest development is particularly significant because SpaceX’s publicly traded float remains relatively constrained compared with the company’s enormous valuation.
In June, SpaceX sold 638.9 million Class A shares at $135 apiece, raising approximately $85.7 billion before expenses. The latest 319 million-share tranche represents almost half that amount.
At Wednesday’s closing price, the newly eligible shares represented roughly $44.6 billion in potential market value. While existing shareholders, employees and early investors may choose to retain their holdings, the possibility of additional selling creates uncertainty around near-term price action.
Trading activity has also moderated after a period of intense momentum. Volume reached 255.2 million shares on August 6 and 167.2 million on August 12, but fell to 72.5 million by August 19.
That combination of lower turnover and increasing potential supply could make the stock particularly sensitive to selling pressure.
SpaceX Still Delivers Strong Growth
Despite the share-supply concerns, SpaceX continues to present a strong operating growth story.
The company reported second-quarter revenue of $7.81 billion, representing a 92% increase from the same period a year earlier. Connectivity remained the largest contributor, generating $4.29 billion in revenue, while AI produced $2.56 billion.
The AI business was particularly notable, with revenue growth of 247.5% year over year. Connectivity also expanded strongly, climbing 65.8%, while the Space segment generated $962 million, up 29%.
Those figures provide an important counterweight to concerns surrounding the stock’s valuation.
SpaceX is increasingly being valued not only for its traditional space business but also for its expanding connectivity and artificial intelligence operations. That broader growth opportunity has helped maintain investor interest despite the stock’s recent retreat.
Valuation Remains Major Investor Concern
The company’s rapid growth has also come with substantial spending requirements.
Capital expenditures reached approximately $18.4 billion during the second quarter, more than twice quarterly revenue. Management has argued that investments in computing infrastructure can generate relatively rapid returns, with recent deployments reportedly achieving payback periods of less than one year.
However, the scale of those investments means investors must continue weighing future growth against capital requirements.
At Wednesday’s close, SpaceX carried a valuation of approximately $1.84 trillion. Based on projected annual revenue of about $44.75 billion, the valuation implies a very high revenue multiple.
That has prompted skepticism from some market observers, even as Wall Street analysts remain broadly optimistic about the company’s long-term prospects.
Analysts Remain Bullish Despite Volatility
Analyst expectations for SPCX remain unusually wide, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the stock.
Several major firms maintain bullish views, with price targets ranging from $210 to $300. Morgan Stanley has a $300 target, while Deutsche Bank has set its target at $235 and UBS at $210.
Clear Street also maintains a Buy rating with a $217 target.
However, not every analyst shares that optimism. Phillip Securities has a Sell rating and a $75 target, highlighting the substantial disagreement over how much investors should pay for SpaceX’s future growth.
Across 35 analysts, the reported consensus remains a Buy, with an average target of $222.73. That would represent substantial upside from Wednesday’s closing price.
For investors, however, the immediate issue may be less about long-term targets and more about how the stock handles the newly available shares.
If eligible holders sell aggressively while trading activity remains subdued, SPCX could face additional downward pressure. Conversely, if trading volume increases and the stock stabilizes despite the larger supply, it could signal that buyers are successfully absorbing the shares.
The share unlock therefore creates a near-term test for SpaceX’s investor demand. Strong Starlink expansion, accelerating AI revenue and progress on major space projects could support the stock, while heavy insider selling, elevated capital spending or execution setbacks could amplify the pressure.
For now, SPCX remains caught between two powerful forces: rapidly expanding business operations and a growing supply of shares available to investors. That tension could determine the stock’s next major move.
