Qualcomm (QCOM) Stock Surges 9% on Massive $60B Amazon AI Partnership
Key Takeaways
- Qualcomm has entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon to develop specialized AI processors designed for inference operations in hyperscale data centers.
- Amazon received a warrant enabling the purchase of up to 25 million Qualcomm shares at a strike price of $161.26 per share.
- The warrant agreement connects to a potential revenue opportunity totaling $60 billion, with expiration set for September 2036.
- Both organizations are jointly engineering optical connectivity technologies, featuring an advanced 1.6T throughput system.
- Shares of QCOM rallied by as much as 9.5% following the announcement, recovering into positive year-to-date performance.
Shares of Qualcomm experienced a substantial rally of up to 9.5% during Tuesday’s trading session after the chipmaker revealed an extensive, multi-phase semiconductor partnership with Amazon, delivering much-needed momentum to the struggling stock.
QCOM began the session approximately 5.6% higher at the opening bell before pushing gains even further throughout the morning. Prior to this announcement, the semiconductor manufacturer had been underperforming relative to its chip industry counterparts.
The strategic agreement focuses on developing customized artificial intelligence processors tailored for Amazon’s hyperscale computing facilities. These specialized chips will prioritize inference operations—the phase where trained AI models produce predictions and responses.
Qualcomm will collaborate closely with Amazon Web Services to engineer power-efficient semiconductor solutions optimized for extensive AI deployments. AWS contributes its massive infrastructure capabilities while Qualcomm leverages its extensive expertise in energy-conscious chip architecture.
The partnership extends beyond processing power to encompass the joint development of ultra-fast optical networking components. This initiative features an upcoming 1.6T platform designed to transfer information at speeds reaching 1.6 terabits per second.
Qualcomm’s sophisticated SerDes technology and optical digital signal processing capabilities form the foundation of these connectivity innovations, addressing the escalating bandwidth requirements of contemporary AI infrastructure.
Understanding the Warrant Structure
Under the terms of the arrangement, Qualcomm granted Amazon a warrant providing the e-commerce giant with rights to acquire up to 25 million shares of QCOM stock at an exercise price of $161.26 per share. This warrant remains valid until September 2036.
According to Qualcomm’s regulatory 8-K disclosure, the warrant correlates with revenue possibilities reaching $60 billion. This structure demonstrates a substantial, long-range financial alignment between both corporations rather than a conventional short-term purchasing arrangement.
Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm’s Chief Executive Officer, characterized the agreement as reflective of evolving AI infrastructure needs. “As AI demand accelerates, data center infrastructure will require advances in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance with more efficiency,” he stated.
Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President at AWS, noted that the partnership “builds on a strong foundation of partnership and reflects our shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Year-to-Date Stock Performance
Even with Tuesday’s significant advance, Qualcomm had been trailing the semiconductor sector throughout 2026. The PHLX Semiconductor Index has climbed 68% year to date, whereas QCOM had remained underwater prior to this week’s development.
The stock has now reclaimed positive territory for the calendar year, although it continues to lag behind many semiconductor industry competitors.
The expanded collaboration also includes Qualcomm’s increased adoption of AWS cloud services, including Amazon Bedrock, to streamline its semiconductor design processes and reduce time-to-market for new products.
Amazon shares experienced a modest decline during the session, falling less than 1%.
QCOM was trading higher by roughly 3.86% during afternoon hours on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
