ING Upgrades Yuan Forecast Amid Positive Market Sentiment

ING has revised its outlook on the Chinese yuan, projecting a more bullish scenario as the currency has strengthened beyond previous expectations. The bank now anticipates the USD/CNY exchange rate to fall within the range of 6.70 to 7.05 for 2026, a shift from its earlier forecasts. This change reflects the yuan's notable performance, having appreciated over 2% against the US dollar this year, distinguishing it as one of the few currencies to gain value since the onset of the Iran war.

The positive sentiment surrounding the yuan is attributed to a combination of strong macroeconomic fundamentals and a shift in policy from the People's Bank of China (PBoC). The PBoC has shown a greater tolerance for yuan appreciation, with recent daily fixings indicating less resistance to the currency's strength. This adjustment may be a strategic response to mitigate the inflationary effects of rising oil prices, as China is the world's largest crude importer.

China's robust export performance and a persistent current account surplus are also providing structural support for the yuan. Additionally, expectations of narrowing yield differentials between the US and China could further bolster the currency, especially if inflation pressures ease and the Federal Reserve considers rate cuts. However, ING warns that while the outlook remains positive, any further gains in the yuan may be tempered if global currencies rebound following a sustained ceasefire in geopolitical tensions.
