German Producer Prices Experience Significant Increase in March

In March, German producer prices rose by 2.5% compared to the previous month, marking the largest monthly increase since August 2022. This rise was primarily driven by a sharp increase in energy product prices, which saw a monthly jump of 7.5%.

The annual comparison shows a slight decline, with producer prices down 0.2% year-on-year, an improvement from a 3.3% decrease recorded in February. The increase in energy prices has largely offset the lower natural gas and electricity prices seen in earlier months, with motor fuel prices rising 22.3% from February and 29.5% from March of the previous year.

Prices for mineral oil products also surged, increasing by 22.9% month-on-month and 18.3% year-on-year. While natural gas and electricity prices remained relatively stable due to long-term contracts, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to exert upward pressure on energy costs, suggesting that consumers and businesses may face sustained higher prices in the near future.
