IBM and Lockheed Martin Bring Advanced Quantum Computing to Switzerland
Key Highlights
- A new quantum computing facility is being established in Switzerland through a collaboration between IBM, Lockheed Martin, and Swiss authorities at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre located in Lugano.
- Switzerland will receive its inaugural IBM Quantum System Two, featuring the cutting-edge IBM Quantum Nighthawk processor.
- The system is scheduled to become operational by late 2026, though cloud-based quantum access will be provided earlier.
- Funding and support come from armasuisse, Switzerland’s Federal Office for Defence Procurement.
- The partnership includes two collaborative research initiatives: quantum sensing technology for navigation systems and advanced metallic alloy manufacturing through additive processes.
A groundbreaking quantum computing facility is being established in Switzerland following a strategic agreement between IBM, Lockheed Martin, and the Swiss federal defence procurement agency.
The facility will be located at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, which operates under the umbrella of ETH Zurich, a prestigious European research institution.
The centerpiece of this initiative will be Switzerland’s inaugural IBM Quantum System Two, representing the newest iteration of IBM’s premier quantum computing technology. The system will be equipped with the IBM Quantum Nighthawk processor, marking IBM’s most sophisticated quantum processing unit available.
The complete installation is targeted for completion by the final quarter of 2026. During the interim period, researchers and industry partners will maintain access to IBM’s quantum computing capabilities via cloud infrastructure.
Access and Participation
The quantum system will be accessible to Swiss enterprises, emerging technology companies, and research organizations through ETH Zurich’s coordination. Users will additionally receive privileges to the IBM Quantum Network and IBM Quantum Platform ecosystem.
Educational initiatives will encompass structured courses, professional certification programs, hands-on workshops, competitive hackathons, and industry conferences.
The research agenda is anticipated to span multiple disciplines including chemistry, materials engineering, computational optimization, and applications in financial technology.
As part of this arrangement, IBM and Lockheed Martin will pursue two collaborative development initiatives. The first examines quantum sensing technologies applicable to navigation systems. The second investigates advanced techniques for additive manufacturing of metallic alloy compositions.
Financial backing and strategic oversight for this venture comes from armasuisse, the Swiss government’s Federal Office for Defence Procurement, which manages national defense and security acquisitions.
Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, emphasized that this infrastructure investment would bolster quantum science research capabilities while simultaneously developing skilled professionals in the field.
Dr. Craig Martell, serving as Lockheed Martin’s chief technology officer, highlighted that this venture strengthens the ongoing collaboration between the organizations in quantum computing and artificial intelligence domains, while establishing Switzerland’s prominence in emerging technologies.
Alessandro Curioni from IBM stated that this program delivers cutting-edge quantum computing technology and specialized knowledge directly to Swiss research centers and commercial enterprises.
Historical Context of the Collaboration
The relationship between IBM and Lockheed Martin in quantum technology began in 2021, marked by Lockheed’s $1.3 million investment in the Institut Quantique at Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec.
Following that initial engagement, both organizations have collaborated on quantum technology applications spanning defense operations, national security infrastructure, and aerospace production processes.
IBM has pledged over $10 billion toward quantum research initiatives and production capabilities across the upcoming five-year period.
This Swiss quantum hub builds upon an earlier decade-long partnership announcement between IBM and ETH Zurich concentrating on fundamental algorithmic research.
European nations have emerged as strategic locations for U.S. quantum technology firms. Substantial government investment combined with robust academic institutions have positioned the region as an attractive environment for quantum technology advancement.
Stock performance for both corporations showed minimal movement during Thursday’s premarket session. IBM shares declined 0.3%, whereas Lockheed Martin shares gained 0.7%.
