Gold Prices Test $4,300 Support Amid Rising Oil Prices and Anticipation of US CPI Report

Gold prices have fallen back to the significant support level of $4,311 as traders react to a combination of rising oil prices and expectations surrounding the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. The recent surge in oil prices has been fueled by escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between the United States and Iran, as well as attacks on Saudi energy facilities by Yemen's Houthis. This geopolitical instability has contributed to a bullish sentiment in the oil market, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil recently surpassing the $100 mark.

The market is currently pricing in a 67% probability of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike at the next meeting, following a strong US Non-Farm Payroll (NFP) report that has led to a hawkish shift in interest rate expectations. Federal Reserve member Christopher Waller indicated that a surprise increase in the monthly core CPI could prompt a rate hike in September. However, the recent spike in oil prices may complicate the Fed's decision-making process, as a higher-than-expected CPI could intensify the risk-off sentiment in the market and lead to further declines in gold prices.

Technical analysis indicates that if gold breaks below the $4,311 support level, it could drop to around $3,885. Conversely, if buyers manage to maintain support at this level, there is potential for a rally towards $4,890. The market is now closely watching the US CPI report, as its outcome could significantly influence gold's trajectory in the short term. A soft CPI reading may provide temporary support for gold, while a hot CPI could trigger a substantial selloff.
