Friday Trading Recap: PayPal (PYPL) Plummets 15% as Acquisition Deal Falls Apart
Quick Summary
- PayPal plunged approximately 13-15% following the collapse of a $50B+ takeover attempt by Stripe and Advent International
- Elastic skyrocketed more than 18-21% following impressive quarterly earnings and upgraded annual guidance
- Affirm climbed 9% on robust quarterly performance and optimistic fiscal 2027 projections
- Marvell declined roughly 7-8% even after surpassing earnings expectations, failing to meet elevated investor hopes
- Rubrik retreated 8% despite posting impressive revenue expansion and increased full-year targets
Friday’s trading session kicked off with mixed signals as market participants monitored Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s address at the Jackson Hole economic symposium. Concerns surrounding diplomatic discussions between the U.S. and Iran, along with volatility in energy sectors, contributed to cautious sentiment at the opening bell.
PayPal emerged as Friday’s most significant decliner. The stock plummeted approximately 13-15% following Bloomberg’s revelation that digital payments processor Stripe and private equity giant Advent International terminated negotiations to purchase the financial technology company. The buying consortium had proposed a valuation exceeding $50 billion for PayPal, representing what could have been among the largest leveraged acquisition transactions in history.
Block had initially participated in the acquisition group but withdrew prior to Stripe and Advent’s formal proposal submission. PayPal declined to provide immediate commentary regarding the situation. The proposed transaction carried a substantial premium over PayPal’s present market capitalization, though remained considerably beneath the approximately $360 billion valuation the company achieved during its 2021 pandemic-era zenith.
Elastic and Affirm Dominate Winners List
Elastic claimed the spotlight as Friday’s top performer, experiencing share price appreciation between 18% and 21%. The search and data observability platform provider disclosed first-quarter revenue expansion of 15.2% compared to the prior year period. Additionally, the company elevated its fiscal 2027 projections, forecasting annual revenue reaching $2.01 billion alongside adjusted earnings per share surpassing Wall Street expectations.
Affirm advanced 9% following disclosure of solid fourth-quarter results. Gross merchandise volume reached $14.1 billion, exceeding the analyst consensus projection of $13.4 billion. Active consumer accounts expanded 20% year-over-year to 27.8 million users. The buy now, pay later platform provider issued fiscal 2027 GMV guidance exceeding $64 billion.
Marvell and Rubrik Decline Despite Positive Reports
Marvell announced second-quarter revenue of $2.739 billion, representing 37% year-over-year growth and establishing a company milestone. Data center segment revenue surged 46% to $2.17 billion. Notwithstanding the better-than-expected performance, shares declined approximately 7-8%, suggesting investors anticipated stronger results following the stock’s impressive trajectory. Marvell shares had appreciated 184% during the year leading up to Thursday’s market close.
Rubrik retreated 8% despite the cloud data security provider demonstrating revenue growth of 38% year-over-year and elevating full-year projections. The enterprise concluded the quarter serving 3,084 customers generating minimum annual recurring subscription revenue of $100,000.
Gap soared 14% after delivering second-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations and announcing new leadership for its Old Navy division. Autodesk declined 4% as forward guidance underwhelmed market participants, despite second-quarter earnings surpassing estimates. Workday experienced modest weakness after publishing better-than-anticipated results and upgrading guidance.
Financial markets continue concentrating on commentary emerging from Jackson Hole as participants seek clarity regarding monetary policy trajectory approaching autumn.
