DOJ Beef Pricing Probe Expands to Include Amazon (AMZN) and Major Retailers
Key Takeaways
- Federal investigators have extended their beef pricing inquiry to include Amazon alongside seven major grocery chains like Walmart and Costco.
- The Justice Department is demanding six years of detailed records covering purchasing practices, pricing strategies, and profit margins.
- In July, ground beef prices reached $7.116 per pound, marking a 9.4% annual increase and approaching all-time records.
- The investigation initially concentrated on meat processing companies, where four firms dominate more than 85% of the nation’s beef processing capacity.
- Analysts maintain a Strong Buy rating on AMZN with a consensus price target of $334.05, suggesting approximately 31% potential upside.
Federal authorities have broadened their investigation into elevated beef prices to encompass Amazon and seven additional prominent grocery retailers across the United States. In July, the Department of Justice dispatched formal requests to these companies seeking comprehensive data spanning six years, including purchasing methodologies, pricing structures, margin analysis, and internal market assessments.
The e-commerce giant joins seven other major players who received similar information requests. The list includes Walmart, Costco, Albertsons, Kroger, Ahold Delhaize, Publix, and Aldi.
The correspondence bearing Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward’s signature does not accuse any of the retailers of misconduct. The requests are investigatory in nature at this preliminary phase.
These information demands form part of an extensive antitrust examination aimed at understanding persistent beef price inflation. July data showed ground beef averaging $7.116 per pound, representing a 9.4% increase compared to the previous year and hovering near peak pricing levels.
Investigation’s Evolution and Scope
Initially, the DOJ concentrated its beef pricing investigation exclusively on processing facilities rather than retail operations. Currently, four dominant meat processing corporations maintain control over more than 85% of the country’s beef processing infrastructure, triggering initial antitrust scrutiny.
Federal investigators are now examining downstream elements of the supply chain to trace how pricing evolves before products reach end consumers. Including major retailers like Amazon in the probe demonstrates the department’s commitment to obtaining comprehensive visibility across the entire pricing ecosystem.
Constrained cattle availability compounds the situation. America’s cattle inventory recently dropped to levels not witnessed since the 1950s, maintaining upward pressure on beef costs independent of any potentially questionable pricing behaviors.
Last August, President Trump unveiled a temporary measure permitting up to 300,000 metric tons of additional beef imports at decreased tariff rates over a 90-day window to address supply constraints. Separately, Walmart announced in July its intention to reduce prices on select seasonal items, beef included.
Amazon’s Broader Regulatory Landscape
The beef pricing investigation represents merely one element within a larger constellation of regulatory challenges currently confronting Amazon. The Federal Trade Commission, joined by 22 state attorneys general, has accused the company of manipulating advertising auction mechanisms and allegedly overcharging approximately 1.2 million advertisers by over $20 billion. The company has simultaneously navigated planned corporate workforce reductions and labor disputes, including a Teamsters-organized strike at its Riverside distribution facility.
Despite regulatory pressures, institutional investor sentiment remains robust. Vanguard maintains a position exceeding 832 million AMZN shares valued at more than $158 billion. Notable investor Stanley Druckenmiller amplified Duquesne’s Amazon holdings by more than tenfold, while Coatue Management expanded its stake by 49%.
The company’s second-quarter performance significantly exceeded expectations, with earnings of $5.75 per share substantially surpassing the $1.82 consensus forecast. Revenue reached $200.61 billion, representing 19.6% year-over-year growth.
AMZN stock commenced trading Thursday at $254.98, operating within a 52-week range spanning $196.00 to $287.20, supported by a market capitalization of $2.75 trillion.
