US-Iran Talks Set for Islamabad as Ceasefire Deadline Approaches

US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to travel to Islamabad for negotiations with Iranian officials as the deadline for a ceasefire approaches. Reports indicate that Iranian negotiators have received approval from the Supreme Leader to participate in the talks, despite previous statements from Iranian officials rejecting negotiations under pressure from the United States. The White House has expressed optimism about the discussions, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that the US has never been closer to an agreement, although former President Donald Trump retains military options if the talks do not yield results.

In New Zealand, inflation data released for the first quarter showed a 0.9% increase quarter-on-quarter and a year-on-year rise of 3.1%, exceeding expectations and keeping inflation above the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's target band. This has led to increased market expectations for near-term interest rate hikes, with projections suggesting close to three hikes this year. However, business confidence in New Zealand has sharply declined, reflecting concerns over geopolitical uncertainties and rising energy costs, creating a complex economic environment.

Meanwhile, in the United States, Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act to enhance federal support for energy production and infrastructure, aiming to boost domestic oil, LNG, and coal supplies. On the market front, oil prices remained stable, and the US dollar saw a slight increase against major currencies amid geopolitical uncertainties. In South Korea, the KOSPI index reached a record high, indicating strong market performance despite the prevailing global tensions.
