U.S. Stock Markets Decline Amid Rising Oil Prices and Treasury Yields

U.S. stock markets closed lower for the third consecutive day, influenced by increasing oil prices and higher Treasury yields, alongside ongoing inflation concerns. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 405.04 points, or 0.77%, to close at 52,386.25. The S&P 500 decreased by 37.16 points, or 0.48%, finishing at 7,636.37, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 168.07 points, or 0.64%, to end at 26,253.34. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks smaller companies, was the weakest performer, declining by 38.97 points, or 1.32%, to 2,921.23.

Brent crude oil prices surged above $100 per barrel, reaching an intraday high of $101.64, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East that raised concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also saw significant increases, nearing $97 per barrel. Higher energy prices are expected to contribute to inflation, complicating the Federal Reserve's outlook ahead of the upcoming U.S. inflation data releases.

Treasury yields also rose, with the 10-year yield reaching as high as 4.85%. This increase followed the U.S. Treasury's announcement of a $6 billion bond-buyback operation, which, although higher than the previous $2 billion, did not meet some investors' expectations for a more aggressive response. The upcoming releases of the Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) data are anticipated to provide further insights into inflation trends, with stronger readings potentially exerting upward pressure on yields and maintaining a defensive market tone.
