U.S. Stock Futures Climb Ahead of Critical August CPI Data and Oracle Earnings Beat
TLDR
- Equity futures moved higher Friday morning following reports that Iran and Oman are working toward an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping
- The August consumer price index report is scheduled for release Friday, with analysts forecasting a 0.4% month-over-month increase and a 3.4% year-over-year reading
- Oracle shares jumped 4.3% in extended trading after the company exceeded earnings projections and increased its fiscal 2027 outlook
- Major U.S. indices including the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq declined Thursday, marking their fourth consecutive session of losses amid elevated oil prices and climbing bond yields
- Traders now assign a 66.7% probability to a Federal Reserve rate increase at its September 16 policy meeting
Stock futures posted modest gains early Friday following a challenging trading week. Market participants were focused on two critical developments: diplomatic negotiations concerning Middle Eastern maritime routes and an upcoming inflation measurement scheduled for later today.
Futures tied to the S&P 500 advanced 0.38%, while Nasdaq 100 futures increased 0.3%, and Dow Jones futures added 0.4%. These gains followed Thursday’s trading session, which extended the losing streak for benchmark indices to four consecutive days.

Four Straight Days in the Red
Thursday’s session saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average decline by over 300 points, while both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite retreated approximately 0.6% to 0.7%. The Dow is currently tracking toward a weekly loss of 2.5%.
Energy market volatility drove much of Thursday’s weakness. West Texas Intermediate crude oil surged past the $100 per barrel threshold, reaching its highest point since May, as tensions between the United States and Iran entered their seventh month.
The ongoing conflict has seen the U.S. Navy destroy five petroleum tankers in the Strait of Hormuz over the past week. This escalation also pressured Treasury markets, with the benchmark 10-year yield climbing above 4.95%—a level last witnessed in October 2023.
During Asian trading hours, the Financial Times published a report indicating that Oman is facilitating talks between Gulf nations and Iran aimed at establishing an agreement to resume commercial maritime traffic through Hormuz. The diplomatic session is scheduled for Monday in Salalah, an Omani port city. Crude oil futures retreated more than 1% following the disclosure.
The sustainability of any potential agreement remains questionable. The United States has historically resisted previous Iran-Oman diplomatic initiatives, and Washington’s naval enforcement operations continue unabated.
Oracle Results Boost Tech Sentiment
Oracle shares surged 4.3% during extended trading hours after delivering quarterly financial results that exceeded analyst expectations. The enterprise software giant secured over $30 billion in new artificial intelligence cloud infrastructure contracts during the period, elevating its total contracted revenue backlog to $664 billion.
Oracle simultaneously increased its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings per share guidance by five cents to $8.10. The company’s cash expenditure for the quarter registered below analyst projections, alleviating investor concerns that aggressive AI infrastructure investments were straining the corporate balance sheet.
Oracle stock had declined more than 20% during 2026 prior to this earnings announcement, as market participants questioned the return profile of massive AI capital commitments. Thursday’s financial disclosure helped mitigate some of those apprehensions.
Adobe shares slipped 2% in after-hours activity despite posting solid earnings figures, as its forward guidance marginally underperformed analyst estimates.
Asia-Pacific equity markets traded predominantly lower. South Korea’s Kospi index retreated 2.8%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost 2.6%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index shed 1.4%. European bourses opened with positive momentum, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 advancing 0.31%.
Thursday also delivered an elevated producer price index reading, with wholesale inflation accelerating 0.4% on a monthly basis and 5.4% annually. This hotter-than-anticipated data prompted traders to increase expectations for Federal Reserve tightening.
Current market pricing reflects a 66.7% probability of a 25 basis point rate increase at the Federal Reserve’s September 16 policy meeting, elevated from 60.4% one day earlier. The August CPI report, projected to register a 3.4% annual inflation rate, represents the final significant economic data release before that monetary policy decision.
