Oracle (ORCL) Stock Surges 3% After Citi Analysts Call Recent Decline Overdone
Key Highlights
- Shares of Oracle advanced 2.84% to close at $148.87 on Wednesday, marking back-to-back session gains
- Citigroup initiated a 90-day positive catalyst watch on ORCL, maintaining its Buy recommendation alongside a $330 target
- Citi analyst Tyler Radke attributes the recent decline to excessive investor capitulation and technical pressure
- At the Deutsche Bank Tech Conference, Oracle highlighted strong performance of its cloud infrastructure with major enterprise customers
- Wall Street consensus reflects a Strong Buy rating from 28 analysts, averaging a $257.79 price objective
Shares of Oracle (ORCL) finished Wednesday’s session at $148.87, registering a 2.84% gain even as broader indices faced headwinds. The S&P 500 declined marginally by 0.02% while the Dow Jones fell 0.21%.
The rally followed Citigroup analyst Tyler Radke’s decision to add the stock to a 90-day positive catalyst watch list. Radke maintained his Buy recommendation while keeping his $330 price objective intact, suggesting potential gains of approximately 122% from present valuations.
According to Radke, the recent downturn was excessive in nature. He identified investor capitulation combined with technical selling dynamics, including pressures related to credit spreads and at-the-market equity offerings, as primary catalysts behind the stock’s weakness.
However, Citi believes the fundamental trajectory is strengthening. The firm highlighted accelerating AI demand and favorable trends for margins and pricing throughout the cloud infrastructure sector.
The stock currently trades 56.94% beneath its 52-week peak of $345.72, reached on September 10th. This significant discount has prompted several analysts to reconsider the risk-reward profile.
Deutsche Bank Conference Remarks Provide Additional Confidence
During Wednesday’s Deutsche Bank Tech Conference, Oracle emphasized that its cloud infrastructure is producing tangible outcomes for major enterprise customers.
These statements helped alleviate worries surrounding Oracle’s substantial debt burden, accumulated to construct AI infrastructure supporting strategic partners like Microsoft and OpenAI.
Citi observed that these positive AI demand patterns may trigger upward estimate revisions before Oracle’s earnings release and investor day scheduled for late October.
Technical Indicators Signal Positive Momentum
The TipRanks Technical Analysis tool presently displays a Buy signal for ORCL. This overall assessment incorporates 10 bullish indicators, five neutral readings, and seven bearish signals.
The stock remains positioned above its 20-day exponential moving average of $143.31, which generates a bullish signal. The Williams %R indicator similarly points to a Buy, indicating the stock maintains upside potential without being overbought.
The Rate of Change registers at 0.26%, validating an upward trajectory. The RSI reading of 51.19 places ORCL within neutral range.
Regarding Wall Street’s collective view, TipRanks displays a Strong Buy consensus derived from 28 Buy recommendations and four Hold ratings issued over the last three months. The mean price target stands at $257.79, suggesting 73% appreciation potential from current price levels.
Wednesday’s trading volume totaled 17.9 million shares, significantly lighter than the 50-day average of 32.4 million. Oracle demonstrated relative strength compared to technology peers, with Microsoft advancing 0.95% while Alphabet’s Class A and C shares declined 1.43% and 1.23% respectively.
