Netflix Co-Founder Reed Hastings Steps Down as Chairman

Reed Hastings, the co-founder and chairman of Netflix, is set to leave the company he helped establish nearly three decades ago. His departure comes at a challenging time for the streaming giant, which is currently seeking new growth opportunities amid increasing competition and a recent failed merger with Warner Bros Discovery.

In a letter to investors, Netflix announced that Hastings will not seek re-election at the upcoming annual meeting in June. He plans to shift his focus towards philanthropy and other personal projects. Following the announcement, Netflix's stock experienced a significant drop of approximately 9%.

The company has forecasted earnings per share for the current quarter that fall short of analysts' expectations, alongside the slowest quarterly revenue growth in a year. Despite these challenges, Netflix maintains its commitment to providing diverse entertainment options, serving over 325 million paid members globally and aiming to reach an audience of nearly one billion. Hastings played a pivotal role in transforming Netflix from a DVD rental service into a leading global streaming platform, navigating the company through various industry shifts, including a surge in viewership during the pandemic.
