Mistral Raises $3.5 Billion for AI Research in Record EU Funding Round
France-based artificial intelligence startup Mistral raised a record 3 billion euros (about $3.5 billion) in funding, according to a Tuesday (Sept. 8) company blog post.
The company’s Series D is the largest equity fundraising round on record for a European tech company, per the post. The financing, which values Mistral at 21 billion euros (about $24 billion), will expand the 3-year-old company’s frontier research and infrastructure, while also scaling commercial growth.
“During the first wave of generative AI, the central question was who could build the most powerful model,” the post said. “Organizations and governments are now asking … how to harness the power of AI for their mission-critical needs without surrendering control over the infrastructure and intelligence loop.”
Demand for that blend of performance with control, choice and independence is increasing as enterprises and governments consider the “technology dependencies, data governance requirements and deployment choices” that come with AI investment, according to the post.
Mistral is the only AI company building the stack needed to address that question with “open-weight models, the infrastructure and the compute capacity they run on, and the products that bring them into production, ensuring that customers are never locked into a single vendor’s roadmap, pricing or availability,” the post said.
Meanwhile, Mistral Co-Founder and CEO Arthur Mensch said the funding will remove a “key bottleneck” in securing the computing capacity required to compete with Chinese AI labs in “frontier” AI training, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.
“With this fundraising we will be controlling an amount of compute that is very comparable to what the Chinese labs have,” he said, per the report. “We have built Mistral to train models and to scale them. We will continue to do that, and that’s really the purpose of this fundraising.”
While the funding is a record for Europe, spotlighting Mistral’s status as the region’s AI champion, it also underscores the gap between the company and rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI, the report said. Anthropic has raised around $100 billion in 2026, ahead of an initial public offering that could value it as high as $2 trillion.
In addition to interest from sectors like oil and gas to aerospace, Mensch said in the report that Mistral has seen increasing demand for cybersecurity services in the wake of an OpenAI incident in which its AI agents broke free of its testing systems and breached software developer site Hugging Face.
