Market Shock: Crude Oil Breaches $100 as Apple Unveils Foldable iPhone and Inflation Pressures Mount
Key Highlights
- Brent crude climbed past $106 while WTI exceeded $101, sparking concerns about extended elevated interest rates
- August U.S. Producer Price Index increased 0.4% monthly and 5.4% annually, maintaining pressure for potential Fed rate increases
- Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, marking its entry into the foldable smartphone category with a $1,999 price tag
- TSMC announced 53% annual revenue surge reaching $16.3 billion, though stock declined approximately 2%
- AeroVironment soared 7% following record-setting quarterly revenue of $480.5 million
Oil prices breached a critical milestone on Thursday, with Brent crude surging over 5% to approximately $106.60 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate similarly advanced beyond the $101 mark.
The rally stemmed from tanker attacks and diminished traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Houthi operations in the Red Sea further intensified supply chain anxieties. Brent has now climbed over 30% since hitting lows in early August.
Persistent Inflation Maintains September Rate Hike Possibility
Elevated oil prices translate directly into inflationary pressures. August’s U.S. Producer Price Index climbed 0.4% month-over-month and registered 5.4% annual growth, with energy costs alone jumping 4.2% during the month.
Financial markets are now factoring in a significant probability that the Federal Reserve will implement another interest rate increase during its September policy meeting. This scenario creates headwinds for technology and growth-oriented equities, which typically underperform during rising rate environments.
The convergence of surging crude prices, persistent inflation, and potential rate increases represents one of the most significant immediate-term challenges confronting market participants.
Apple Makes Foldable Smartphone Debut
Apple introduced the iPhone Duo on Thursday, marking the company’s inaugural entry into foldable smartphone technology. The $1,999 device boasts a 7.6-inch interior display alongside a 5.4-inch exterior screen, driven by Apple’s latest A20 Pro processor.
Samsung presently dominates the foldable segment with approximately 38% market penetration. Industry analysts project Apple could capture roughly one-quarter of the market.
Apple stock advanced between 1% and 2% during Thursday’s trading session, surpassing most of the wider technology sector.
TSMC Delivers 53% Revenue Growth Despite Stock Decline
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing reported August revenue of NT$514.8 billion, equivalent to approximately $16.3 billion. This figure marks 53% annual growth and establishes a new company record.
TSMC manufactures semiconductors for industry leaders including Nvidia, Apple, and AMD. Its financial performance serves as a crucial indicator of AI chip market demand.
Notwithstanding the impressive results, its U.S.-traded shares dropped roughly 2%. This decline underscores the elevated expectations within the AI semiconductor industry, where even exceptional growth doesn’t necessarily drive stock appreciation.
AeroVironment Surges 7% on Record-Breaking Revenue and Order Backlog
AeroVironment emerged as among Thursday’s top performers, climbing approximately 7%. The defense contractor announced record fiscal first-quarter revenue of $480.5 million alongside bookings totaling roughly $683 million.
The company’s funded backlog reached a record $1.5 billion, representing 37% year-over-year expansion. Demand for unmanned aerial systems and autonomous defense technology continues accelerating as governments allocate resources toward military modernization efforts.
The company maintained its full-year revenue guidance between $2.125 billion and $2.225 billion.
Nvidia and Palantir Deepen AI Collaboration
Palantir revealed expanded collaboration with Nvidia focusing on sovereign AI infrastructure and AI-enabled supply-chain optimization. The arrangement integrates Nvidia’s Nemotron models with Palantir’s analytical platform.
Neither company experienced positive stock momentum following the announcement. Both Nvidia and Palantir declined Thursday as escalating oil prices, inflation concerns, and rising bond yields pressured technology stocks.
The partnership demonstrates Nvidia’s strategic expansion beyond semiconductor sales into software services and enterprise artificial intelligence solutions.
