Key Market Events This Week: Inflation Data, Oracle (ORCL) Earnings, Diesel Crisis, and Apple’s Big Reveal
Key Highlights
- August’s inflation report on Friday may influence the Federal Reserve’s decision to increase rates in September
- Employment figures exceeded expectations with 162,000 new positions added in August versus a predicted 55,000
- Oracle’s stock has declined almost 20% year-to-date as investors worry about debt levels related to data center investments
- Diesel fuel reached an unprecedented $5.85 per gallon due to tensions involving Iran and reduced Russian exports
- Apple prepares to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and a foldable device under recently appointed CEO John Ternus
The August Consumer Price Index data arriving Friday represents this week’s most significant event for market participants. Analysts anticipate inflation will register at 3.4% on an annual basis, consistent with July’s reading. Core inflation is projected to climb 2.4%, marking the most moderate increase since March 2021.
Recent employment strength intensifies the spotlight on monetary policy. August’s job creation of 162,000 substantially surpassed the anticipated 55,000 figure. This robust labor market performance diminishes arguments for the Federal Reserve to maintain current interest rate levels.
Market participants currently assign a 60% probability to a rate increase at the Fed’s September 15-16 gathering. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh continues emphasizing inflation control as a primary objective, stressing that price stability requires active management.
Thursday’s Producer Price Index data will provide preliminary insight into inflationary trends ahead of Friday’s consumer figures. Forecasters expect the PPI to demonstrate a 5.2% annual acceleration.
Oracle’s Quarterly Report Under Scrutiny
Oracle releases its quarterly results on Thursday. The technology giant’s shares have tumbled nearly 20% in 2025 and approximately 30% over twelve months. Investor anxiety stems from substantial borrowing undertaken to finance aggressive data center expansion.
Bank of America analyst Tal Liani maintains an optimistic outlook. His projections indicate infrastructure-as-a-service revenue could surge 116% compared to the prior year. Liani contends the market hasn’t fully recognized the company’s expansion trajectory linked to data center achievements.
Adobe releases earnings Thursday as well, following a recent leadership transition. Macy’s also reports the same day, offering perspective on consumer spending patterns.
Software companies have recently outperformed semiconductor firms. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF has gained 15% since July, while the semiconductor benchmark has fallen 18% during the identical timeframe.
Diesel Prices Reach Unprecedented Territory
American diesel prices have climbed to an all-time peak of $5.85 per gallon. This surpasses the prior record of $5.816 established in June 2022.
Escalating tensions with Iran have disrupted refined petroleum product shipments from the Persian Gulf region. Simultaneously, Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian refining facilities have constrained worldwide availability.
American distillate reserves have dropped to historically low levels for this period. East Coast supplies are at unprecedented lows precisely as the area approaches winter when heating fuel demand intensifies.
“Record diesel will start funneling down into the economy,” said Patrick de Haan of GasBuddy.
Apple conducts its product presentation on Wednesday. The technology leader is anticipated to showcase the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone model. This marks the inaugural product launch under new CEO John Ternus, who assumed leadership from Tim Cook on September 1.
Trading was suspended Monday in observance of Labor Day.
