India and South Korea Aim for $50 Billion Trade Target by 2030

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is visiting India for the first time in eight years, with plans to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The two nations are aiming to significantly enhance their economic ties, targeting a near doubling of bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, up from approximately $25.7 billion last year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to upgrade their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement amid increasing global supply chain disruptions.

The partnership is seen as strategically important, particularly in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions, including those related to the Iran war. Lee emphasized the potential for cooperation in key sectors such as shipbuilding, finance, artificial intelligence, and defense. A major focus of the discussions will be on supply chain security, with South Korea looking to India to help mitigate risks, including a recent request for increased naphtha supplies, a vital petrochemical feedstock.

Despite the positive outlook, challenges remain, particularly regarding the trade imbalance, as South Korea currently maintains a significant trade surplus with India. Both countries are seeking to address this issue through deeper cooperation and increased imports. Analysts suggest that sectors like shipbuilding, which align with India's employment goals and South Korea's industrial strengths, could facilitate more balanced trade growth. Lee's visit will also include meetings with business leaders to further reinforce the commercial aspects of the partnership.
