ECB Official Warns of Potential Impact of Rising Energy Prices on Consumption

Philip Lane, the Chief Economist of the European Central Bank (ECB), has indicated that a sustained increase in energy prices could negatively affect consumer spending as autumn approaches. He noted that while the situation remains uncertain, the possibility of a decline in consumption due to rising energy costs is a concern for policymakers.

Lane's comments come amid discussions about the resilience of the European economy, with ECB President Christine Lagarde recently highlighting strong consumer behavior despite price fluctuations. However, Lane pointed out that wages have not significantly adjusted in response to the energy price shock, which may complicate the economic outlook.

The ECB is currently evaluating its monetary policy options, with the likelihood of consecutive interest rate hikes slightly above 50%. This reflects the central bank's ongoing assessment of inflationary pressures and their potential impact on economic growth.
