Central Banks Monitor Fuel Prices Amid Inflation Concerns

Central banks are intensifying their scrutiny of refining margins, commonly referred to as "crack spreads," as rising fuel shortages lead to increased prices for gasoline and diesel. This heightened focus comes in response to significant disruptions in fuel supply chains, particularly due to ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, which have adversely affected refining operations and exports.

Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England, indicated that refined fuel prices might serve as a more accurate indicator of inflation than crude oil prices alone. The Bank of England has projected that escalating energy costs could contribute an additional 0.4 percentage points to inflation during the latter half of 2026, underscoring the potential impact of fuel prices on overall economic stability.
